.Key Murdoch Aide to Be Prosecuted in Hacking Case
LONDON — Once among the most powerful figures in the British media, Rebekah Brooks, the former head of Rupert Murdoch’s British newspaper empire and a close friend of Prime Minister David Cameron, faced charges on Tuesday that she, her husband and four others conspired to pervert the course of justice in the hacking scandal that has burrowed into public life here.
It was the first time that charges have been formulated since the police reopened inquiries into the affair in January 2011. The accusations brought the scandal to a watershed between criminal investigations, which have resulted in around 50 people being arrested and then set free on bail, and the prospect of trial before robed High Court judges.
The charges relate to a time of high drama when the full extent of the scandal was emerging: Mr. Murdoch and his son James flew to London to testify before a parliamentary panel after closing down a 168-year-old tabloid, The News of the World; Ms. Brooks resigned, facing the first of a series of police accusations related to phone hacking and corruption; and the affair began to taint the political elite that had long sought Mr. Murdoch’s favor.
In the midst of those events, between July 6 and 19, 2011, Ms. Brooks, her husband and the four others were accused variously of concealing documents, computers and archive material from Scotland Yard officers investigating the scandal, according to prosecutors on Tuesday.
Ms. Brooks and her husband went to separate police stations in London on Tuesday and the Crown Prosecution Service said they had been charged. They are to appear in court at a later date.

Sports car legend Carroll Shelby dead at 89
5:54 p.m. CDT, May 11, 2012
He died on Thursday at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, according to the company, Carroll Shelby Licensing. The firm did not disclose the cause of death.
A post on his Facebook page last month revealed he had been hospitalized for pneumonia.
Shelby was one of the few prominent designers to work with all three major American car companies, starting with Ford Motor Co. in the 1960s. His last collaboration with Ford was on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500.
“My name is Carroll Shelby and performance is my business,” he said in an early Cobra commercial.
Shelby was born in Leesburg, Texas, in 1923. He started racing cars in the 1950s, and in 1959 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a marathon race held in France.
But he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition that forced him to quit racing. In 1960 he drove one race with nitroglycerin pills under his tongue. He complained that he would have won if not for the pills.
Shelby had a heart transplant in 1990 and a kidney transplant in 1996.
In 1962 Shelby test-drove the AC 260 roadster, the car made with a Ford engine that would become the Shelby Cobra. His company built the first Cobras in Venice, California. Two years later, Ford asked Shelby to develop a high-performance Mustang.
“Whether helping Ford dominate the 1960s racing scene or building some of the most famous Mustangs, his enthusiasm and passion for great automobiles over six decades has truly inspired everyone who worked with him,” said Edsel Ford II, grandson of the No. 2 U.S. automaker’s founder Henry Ford.
His contract with Ford ended in 1970, and he then worked with Chrysler and General Motors Co. In 2001 Shelby was working with Ford again.
Shelby is survived by three children and his wife, Cleo.

In JPMorgan Chase Trading Bet, Its Confidence Yields to Loss
When reports emerged in the first week of April that a JPMorgan Chase trader in London was making bets so big they were distorting a little-known market in credit derivatives, an embedded regulator approached executives.
The senior supervisor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, one of roughly 40 Fed officials who work inside the bank, was told that senior management was not overly concerned about the reports, according to a person briefed on the matter.
The executives had been assured that things were fine by Ina Drew, the bank’s overall chief investment officer, and Bruno Iksil, the so-called London Whale leading the trade. Jamie Dimon, the chief executive, who had been traveling in Dallas and Atlanta that week, returned to tell analysts that the reports were “a complete tempest in a teapot.”
That would soon change. A week and a half later, top executives in a conference room on the 48th floor of the bank’s Park Avenue headquarters realized they had a problem.
Losses were mounting on the trade as hedge funds’ bets against the bank turned profitable. Conference calls between New York and London were not producing satisfactory answers. A team of risk officers now referred to as the Navy Seals began meeting twice a day, at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., with Mr. Dimon frequently in attendance.
The trading unit, called the chief investment office, was a star performer within the bank, producing profits even while intended to mitigate risk. But questions were being raised about what the trading unit was telling top executives in New York. Concerned risk executives began producing an analysis of the “Whale” trade every day and updating the New York Fed.

Gang of eight accused of snatching women’s handbags
Sharjah Sharjah Police arrested a gang of eight men Tuesday for allegedly stealing handbags from women who had withdrawn cash from banks.
Police said the gang stole the handbags by first distracting the women.
After the women withdrew their cash and entered their vehicles, one of the suspects would knock on the victim’s window and claim that there was a problem with the vehicle. As the victim got out of the car, another suspect would then snatch the purse from the passenger seat and run away
Official at the Criminal Investigation Department
An official at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Sharjah Police said they received a number of complaints, including three women from Al Butaina area, stating that some men had snatched their handbags.
Knock on victim’s car window
“After the women withdrew their cash and entered their vehicles, one of the suspects would knock on the victim’s window and claim that there was a problem with the vehicle. As the victim got out of the car, another suspect would then snatch the purse from the passenger seat and run away,” the CID official said.
A security team was then formed to investigate the robberies and, during the investigation, Sharjah Police were able to arrest two Afghan men who confessed that they worked with six other accomplices, also from Afghanistan.
They also admitted to stealing a large amount of money, which police declined to disclose, in addition to gold jewellery.
The investigation was further intensified and police were able to identify the whereabouts of the remaining suspects, including two men who were previously deported for carrying out thefts from bank customers and who had re-entered the country illegally.
The victims then confirmed that the suspects in question had stopped them outside the bank. The case has been referred to the Sharjah Public Prosecution.
Sharjah Police have warned bank customers to take precautions while withdrawing large sums of money from banks, and not to go alone in order to prevent such crimes.
